So you came in on the September 2014 wave of applications, and with it, your character was given a key. Or maybe it was the October 2014 round, and you were given a clue you'd like to dig into further. Good news: This is where you redeem it. It certainly seems that way.

By the way, someone saw you two disturbing their holy grounds. And then swam away to tell their fry what happened.

By the time you get around to taking a scientific whiff, there are about thirty of these scrambling out of the surf toward you, shrieking in rage and wielding everything from human-made spears and swords to clubs made of driftwood and the discarded teeth of a very large shark.

They're going to make every attempt to kill you. How dare you.

(Nobody is required to die, but if they manage to escape, it's going to be a close one.)

The first few pages of the notebook are very dumb. Someone doodled cartoony bombs, 3D cubes, loopy cursive L's, and wrote

I.M.&L.O.

in a big heart covering one of the pages. Not that that's such a great feat, it's a small notebook. Small enough to fit in a breast pocket.

End result, whether you got away or not: Those merfolk were actually not so bad. They're ugly, but up until now it was entirely possible they spotted Maria (and vice versa) and went along on their merry way.

You've now succeeded made them extremely hateful toward land dwellers. From here on out, there will be increased incidences of them attacking people who swim, wade into deeper swamp water, or simply get too close to the beach if they're feeling particularly territorial that day.

Are there clues as to what those initials mean on later pages?

You totally stomped all over their most ascended burial grounds and evidently you're still trying to steal one of their poor departed children from them, so no.

There are references to "Lor" now and then but no, whoever wrote this did it under the assumption that they'd be the only reader.

It's yours now, if only because these merfolk aren't very intelligent and the main thing they understand right now is "you wronged us so we'll wrong you".

maria would probably know their general territory to warn people about not going too close, right? if they've spotted each other before

Karmin can't read earth English, he was never taught how. He won't understand what's written but are there more doodles or other clues in the book that might lead him to other locations within Northtown or other areas within Box?

They consider "the ocean" to be their territory, but their actual stomping grounds are surprisingly close to the hell gate.

The waters between the boardwalk and the lighthouse will be the worst places to be after this. Nowhere along the shoreline/in the water is 100% safe, but but the farther out from that area you go, the better your chances of no being attacked.

Pretty much, yeah.

Wow, look at me forgetting he can't read it! There's a lot of English there if at some point he'd like to run it past someone who knows the language, but yes, for now there are drawings. Mostly it seems to relate to DNA sequences and complex chemical formulas. Occasionally the drawings take on a more professional form, illustrating animal skulls or what appear to be human finger bones with some degree of competence.

They're still not that good, though.

Near the end among the notes are a few weird designs, including the octokittens Karmin's already seen. Included are a fish with fur, a different sort of fish with lizard legs, and something that was scribbled out so hard the page ripped a little.
