You can check any Box community profile or the bottom of the Latest Page to see when the app round is open. If you reply before the mods have added the "Apps are Open" comment, your app will be deleted. We also have an application queue page, which gets updated during app rounds.

Applications are not processed until the last day of the application round, due to the way our new character introduction logs are set up. Characters are placed and occasionally given items in ways which encourage character relation building from the start. This means we need to know approximately how many people we have coming in so we can plan it out.

Character Information
Character Name: Cecil
Canon: Welcome to Night Vale
Canon Point: Right before they go to the weather in Episode 25: One Year Later
Is your character Dead, Undead or Alive: Alive!
History: Wikia, episode transcripts, official page

As a side note: It is completely unknown what Cecil looks like. In the FAQ on the Commonplace Books website, the answer to “what does [insert character here] look like” is, in fact: “what do YOU think they look like?” As such, I find it hard personally to subscribe to one specific look for Cecil. One of the ideas I’ve seen going around is that Cecil looks different to everyone he meets, and I think I appreciate that idea of how he looks most of all, and will be using various interpretations seen around the internet in his icons.

Personality: Cecil is a man. He is wearing a tie. He is not tall or short, he is not thin or fat. He has eyes, a nose, hair, and a smile (is that a smile?) He is the voice of Night Vale. He is the host for the news show on Night Vale Community Radio. Presumably. If they even exist and Cecil isn't just talking to himself in an empty room. He doesn't know; he's never actually bothered to check if his microphone is plugged in.

Cecil’s job as the voice Night Vale's community radio news show is a task he takes very seriously.

...sort of.

Well, okay, so he does take the job very seriously in most cases, and he considers it an important and essential position. Now, being from Night Vale, his news radio show doesn't quite match up with what might come out of NPR. Though it follows on that sort of vein, Cecil's show swings to the decidedly more creepy side, reporting on things such as a pyramid that suddenly appeared in Night Vale, a cat that suddenly appears in the men's bathroom in the radio station and floats about four feet off the ground near the sink, and the faceless old woman who lives in your house. These are just some of the milder things that happen in Night Vale that make their way onto Cecil's radio show, that he reports with very little indication that such a thing is an oddity. Or, if it is something out of the ordinary, then it isn't really immensely strange, merely something different. Speaking of the cat that pops up in the men's restroom, he merely remarks on it as 'something odd.

Cecil can often sound fairly creepy during the show, speaking in a lower, more serious (borderline threatening) tone, and then suddenly do a complete 180 and sound like a complete, well, goofball. It literally is like emotional whiplash. See here for a 50 second example. Honestly, listening to Welcome to Night Vale is constantly like this. As much as Cecil is and can be the serious reporter of the news in Night Vale, he can also become a total dork on air when talking about things like cat videos and Carlos the Scientist. Especially when talking about Carlos the Scientist, who is introduced in the first episode of Night Vale and becomes a reoccurring character, mostly because of Cecil's crush on him, which he talks about openly on the air. When talking about or especially to Carlos, Cecil kind of transforms into a bit of a teenager with a crush, tripping a bit over his words and often saying things that are a bit out of place. Carlos calls him at some point to talk to him about the fact that the clocks in Night Vale don't work, and apparently all that Cecil was able to say in response was "neat!" He is later very embarrassed about this, and bemoans it on air.

He also has the tendency to jump to conclusions that often turn out to be the wrong conclusion entirely, and completely miss the point. For example, when it is discovered that Hiram McDaniels (a 5-headed dragon that was arrested for insurance fraud) has a blog where he makes a comment that begins with: "If I were Mayor...." Cecil immediately comes to the conclusion that Hiram is planning on running for Mayor and gives him his full support. In addition, when Carlos calls him to report on the clocks and asks him to make a mention of it on air, Cecil completely misinterprets Carlos's reasoning for calling, and wonders what Carlos is trying to say...even though the scientist prefaced the conversation with: "I am not calling for personal reasons." Also, when he gets an idea in his head, it is very hard to get him to abandon it for any reason, even when there is proof against it. The best example of this is when Cecil became convinced that mountains weren't real, and was still skeptical of their existence even after being shown one.

At first, Cecil seems fairly mild-mannered and relatively friendly. He handles any and all news given to him with grace, and reports on it no matter how strange it is. However, as the show goes on, Cecil's personality emerges a great deal more during the show, and proves that he is more than willing to put in an editorial or two about his own opinions on things, as well as to pinpoint people he doesn't like (I.E.- he's constantly "calling out" a man named Steve Carlsburg, who he seems to have a personal vendetta against, blaming him for things that happen that he has no proof that Steve caused.) He also seems to have a certain idea of what is appropriate (or politically correct,) as he is constantly talking about what a jerk the Apache Tracker (a man of Slavic origin who wanders around with a racist caricature of a Native American headdress on his head and claims to use "Indian Magics") is.

Though Cecil does his best to be professional on-air (and though he does fail at it from time to time,) his professionalism is sometimes used as an excuse to wander into dangerous situations. Cecil has used the fact that he's a reporter as reasoning for talking to a Hooded Figure (which he himself reported on as a dangerous activity in the pilot episode,) wandering through a portal that appeared in his recording studio, and even taking a trip down into a subway that had appeared overnight, even though an intern at the station had disappeared down there earlier and had never reappeared.

Night Vale is a creepy, creepy place with the Sheriff's Secret Police department that wear leather balaclavas and enforce strange laws and rules, a City Council that all speak together as a hive mind, a Glow Cloud that sits on the PTA, a dog park in which humans and dogs are not allowed to enter and that is inhabited by Hooded Figures, and a public library inhabited by dangerous books and even more dangerous librarians. Cecil reports on these things on a daily basis, and doesn't seem to find much of it out of the ordinary, be it dinosaurs that appear out of a portal and attack during a PTA meeting, people being taken by the Secret Police, or a strange new policy put in place by the City Council that requires “reeducation.” In fact, he often fully supports these measures and often makes an effort to stay within them himself, no matter how ridiculous they might seem. There are times where he doesn't even seem phased by death, such as instances where half of a neighborhood in Night Vale is completely wiped out, or if one of the interns at the radio station is killed or goes missing, as they seem to do on a regular basis. He even speaks about the human sacrifice lottery with ease. However, this isn't always the case. Though Cecil may be used to much of Night Vale's oddities, he still can be scared, frightened, or deeply upset. For example, when he manages to make Station Management (a large shape only seen in shadow behind the door to their office) angry, he ends up having to hide under his desk, whispering into the microphone, terrified, as whatever it is finally comes out of his office. He also talks about the horrors of Valentine's Day and Street Cleaning Day...though he gives no real concrete details, it is implied that horrible things happen on these days. Then there's the portal he goes through during Sandstorm part B where he sounds absolutely terrified by what he sees on the other side, even going so far to ask if he is "in Hell." Similarly, though Cecil often handles death with grace and acceptance, there are times when even he can be deeply upset by it. Namely, when he finds out that Carlos seems to be dying, he becomes very upset to the point of tears on air, and curses Night Vale and himself for not being able to help.

Speaking of Carlos (whom Cecil has a terrible crush on,) let's talk for a minute about Cecil's sexuality. It's hard to really pin down exactly what that is. He obviously is completely enamored of Carlos often to the point of distraction (calling him "this town's favorite scientist,") but also he talks about how the scout master in Night Vale asks him to "think of what they might have been" and even talks admiringly about one of Hiram McDaniel's heads. So really, who knows with Cecil. He likes Carlos and turns into a mess around him. He also seems attracted to a 5-headed-dragon. I don't know.

Abilities/Strengths and Weaknesses:
Abilities: Any powers and knowledge that Cecil has are never really concretely described or mentioned. However, it seems to be, over the course of the show, that Cecil has an ability to know the news in Night Vale as it is happening. This is most prominent when Carlos is dying and Cecil talks about how he can do nothing but sit in his booth and talk about it, or when he narrates the events of someone’s life as it is happening. It’s unknown how he’s getting his information in this case; there are some hints later that he is being handed notes (presumably) by the current intern, but there’s no real concrete canon evidence one way or another. I have no idea how this would manifest itself in the Box, or if it would at all. I’m tempted to say that it really wouldn’t manifest itself except on the rare occasion if something really important is happening that Cecil wants to report on, and even then, the details would be sketchy.

Strengths: For the most part, Cecil is highly adaptable. Though he has the ability to be scared, even when he is, he usually soldiers on despite it. He takes most things in stride. He’s also fairly used to odd and dangerous things happening and avoiding dying as a result of them. There’s also a good chance he has some fighting ability, as he talks about trying to choke his double to death when he attacked him during the Sandstorm, Part A.

Weaknesses: Cecil has this really bad habit of running into danger because of journalism. Oh look, a thing that could potentially be dangerous! Clearly he must investigate it. This isn’t 100% of the time (there are times when he knows better and stays out of it,) but he has definitely used it as an excuse to go through a vortex and into a mysterious subway. Also the fact that he’s fairly adjusted to being a place where bad things constantly happen, it means that he can be less cautious about things that might kill him.

Samples
First Person Sample: Here!
Third Person Sample:
These are things that Cecil is familiar with: the microphone, his recording booth, notes slipped out from under the doors of Station Management, strange lights in the sky above the Arby's, his Bloodstone Circle, a general dislike of Desert Bluffs. Even things that are generally unfamiliar, Cecil is used to taking these things in stride. The strange children with missives from the City Council, for example. He handles that particular quirk of theirs quite well, all things considered. He could scream, like Intern Carl did the first time they appeared, or, like Intern Maria, write an angry letter. Then again, Intern Maria disappeared two days later and hasn’t been seen since, so writing a letter probably isn’t Cecil’s best option anyway.

It is something entirely different, however, to wake up in a strange place. Especially without being told beforehand. Rather rude, Cecil thinks, as he stares at the unfamiliar ceiling. If you’re going to be kidnapped by a strange entity and taken to places yet unknown, one should be given the proper notice. Mayor Pamela Winchell stated as much in last month’s new law, put into effect a week after the announcement. He wonders whether he should complain or not. At least whomever transported him to wherever he is had the grace to put him in a bed, so he supposes he might be able to give them a little bit of leeway. It doesn’t quite make up for the sudden change of scenery, however, though it softens the blow. He probably should get up and put in a missive to the City Council via Bloodstone Circle before he’s fined for unnotified displacement. The punishment this week was losing a kidney, and Cecil is rather fond of his, and would prefer not to lose it.

It isn’t until he sits up, slowly, and glances around, that he realizes that he may not have access to a Bloodstone Circle in a hospital. More’s the pity. Perhaps there is somewhere else where one might reside. Cecil pushes to his feet, moving for the window. Best contact them as soon as possible; perhaps the punishment will be less severe if he contacts them sooner. He peers out the window at the surrounding areas curiously. Well, he will never know unless he gets out there! With a huff, Cecil turns from the window, and moves to try and find an exit.

Characters in The Box Already: None

Character Information
Character Name: Sollux Captor
Canon: Homestuck
Canon Point: Right after Aradiabot explodes.
Is your character Dead, Undead or Alive: Alive
History: Wiki link is here
Personality: Haunted for most of his life by the prophetic screams of the imminently deceased and visited by gruesome visions of their deaths in his sleep Sollux was never a very happy troll. Quite the naysayer he would always insist that everything was going to bring trouble to him and his friends. Sarcastic and rude no matter his mood he could go from being hypersensitive and aggressive one minute to calm and collected the next. In fact he was known for his bipolar personality, and often swung between periods of depression and hyperactivity.

He tried his best to cultivate a cool guy image for himself in order to hide or inhibit his moody behavior, but never managed to pull it off exactly right. Usually this just results in him remaining silent in large groups so that he doesn't say anything, often making him come off a bit uncaring, and he is to an extent. More empathetic than most trolls, given his own life trials, he is still, at his core a troll and thus isn't motivated to show any kindness to others easily. When depressed his behavior is withdrawn, emotional, sensitive, and hyper defensive. He lacks the will to do most mundane tasks and the ability to even care about how much he isn't doing.

On the other side of the spectrum of course is Sollux at his high, a complete troll, and that's meant in the internet sense of the word. Sarcastic to a fault, he isn't afraid to make a joke no matter how offensive or hurtful it may be, oftentimes because he assumes everyone else will take it as he joke it's meant to be which usually isn't the case. He doesn't think about others when he's at his high points, doesn't really think about much of anything other than having a good time, and constantly poking fun at people, and let's be honest, acting a bit ridiculous is how he does that. Of course once he comes down he feels like shit about how he acted and thinks he is the worst troll alive, but that's the endless swing of things. He really is an empathetic person, especially for his friends, and even strangers to an extent if he can relate to them, but his actions are at the mercy of his moods which are never easy to predict.

Sollux never had a lot in his life that he could fight for. Being gifted with prophetic visions meant he knew things would always end badly for him, and it also meant he always knew there was practically nothing he could do about. These feelings of uselessness were often what caused his listless and irrational behavior, as well as his mood swings. Incapable of stopping his visions of doom from becoming reality he started to hate himself and often felt there was nothing he could do right, despite all his accomplishments and abilities.

In his worst fits he would often wonder how anyone could even tolerate him, but no matter which way his mood swung or how badly it did his friends stood by him. Fighting for them, and others, gave his life purpose, gave him meaning, and made life feel less pointless. First and foremost Sollux is loyal to his friends and counts their opinions high above his own and anyone else's, though he'll never admit it. Only slightly second to this is his own set of values, and moral beliefs, which come a bit closer to human morals than most other trolls, his apathy for the world they live in somewhat protecting this individual quirk from being stamped out entirely by the cruelty of Alternian life, or perhaps, strengthened because of it.

Abilities/Strengths and Weaknesses: Sollux is a high level Psionic with a wide, and largely unspecified range of abilities. What we do know is that he has prophetic visions of doom regarding the demise of others, hears the screams of the imminently deceased in his waking hours, can shoot powerful lazers from his eyes, and that he can put people to sleep by snapping. However, despite all these extraordinary abilities Sollux's most useful power by far is his telekinesis. Sollux is capable of moving thousands of heavy meteors at high speeds across space with just a thought and can even move himself and others at the speed of light, though doing so for more than a few seconds can have disastrous results for his physical well being.

Slightly less dangerous than his psionic abilities are Sollux's skills with computers. Sollux is a more than formidable hacker. His skill level with computers is straight up unreal, and that is meant in the most literal sense of the word. Sollux is the best hacker on his entire planet, and likely the best within his entire universe. He is so good at hacking and coding that he is capable of creating viruses that can curse people in real life. It might as well be magic for all the sense it makes (i.e. none), but nonetheless it is a canon ability he is shown to possess.
