Personality: When Dante is first introduced, he comes off as a sloppy, rude, and uncaring individual. Like, Ninja Theory really made the effort to make him out to be the biggest edgy loser possible. He lives alone in a trailer outside of a boardwalk carnival. His nights are spent attending strip clubs, boning, and drinking. He doesn’t seem to take care of his belongings or himself for that matter. Trash and clothing are strewn all over the floor and it’s entirely possible he hasn’t taken the trash out in a good few weeks. In short: he’s pretty gross. His personality isn’t much better either. When Kat (a medium working for his brother) knocks on his door to warn him that he’s in danger, Dante takes the liberty of answering the door buck naked with a grand total of zero shame.
Dante has lived his entire life under the impression that he’s some kind of freak. Seeing as that his memory was wiped and he was only given the memory that he was an orphan, he grew up feeling he didn’t owe anyone anything. The only person he had to live for was himself and for that reason, he’s first portrayed as completely standoffish and selfish. There were times he grew up hating himself (and I elaborate more on this in the abilities/strengths and weaknesses section) because of the budding abilities he would notice he had or acquire as he got older. When he became aware that his life was being pretty much manipulated and controlled by demons (who tortured him in various institutions on a daily basis) he was extremely bitter. While he unashamedly began rebelling and fighting back against them, he also began second guessing his own nature, wondering if he was fully demon as well. He would cut into his chest and expose his heart just to remind himself that he wasn’t.
While this whole bit is a bit extremely and silly in regards to “writing in video games lol,” it does show that Dante is capable of being extremely insecure. He doesn’t show it and upon first meeting, people wouldn’t guess it, but it’s definitely a giant weakness in his personality.
His personality does begin to take a turn after he meets Kat and Vergil. Part of this is due to the fact he begins to regain his memories. Again, so far, Dante had grown up believing he was just an orphan. The lack of memories was blamed on a fabled incident where he got sick when he was very young and got amnesia as a result. As it turns out, Dante’s father had erased he and his brother’s memories after Dante experienced his mother’s murder. So when Vergil helps Dante regain his memories, Dante suddenly realizes that there are crap ton of emotions and feelings he never thought he was capable of.
Remembering his mother and his short-lived happy family life forces Dante to recognize things like empathy, sympathy, and love. He suddenly realizes that there was a time when he felt these things and as the game continues, Dante’s formerly close bond with his brother quickly rekindles itself. Furthermore, he begins to form feelings for Kat.
Kat and Dante’s relationship is a good example of how Dante is actually able to form friendships with others. Dante is incredibly distrusting and wary of others because of how badly he’d been fucked over by demons (who often passed themselves off as humans) in his childhood. He doesn’t open himself up to others often. At one point, he gives Kat the ultimatum to either open up to him or have him not trust her at all (what a charmer). She explains to him that she too experienced a childhood of brutality inflicted by demons. It’s at that point that Dante realizes he’s not alone in the world and that it’s not just people like him (nephilim) who are being forced to deal with the scum of society. Humans and regular everyday people are too. People who are a whole lot less capable of defending themselves.
At the end of the game, Dante’s compassion and empathy for humanity is displayed a lot more obviously. So much so that he fights and nearly kills his own brother defending them. In short, Vergil wants to rule over humanity and borderline enslave them much like the demons had (with the excuse that he was going to be classier about it, okay, he wears a fedora) and wants Dante to join him. Dante refused, saying that humanity was what saved the world to begin with (using Kat as an example). And Dante was willing to literally stab one of the two people who saved him from being a total waste of space and brainwashed loser to protect humanity.
Summed up, outwardly, Dante is still growing when it comes down to actually coming off as a decent person. He doesn’t have much of a grasp on manners, etiquette and cordiality. He’s not much of an academic kind of person either, having an inefficient history of (probably never) going to an actual school. That said, inwardly, Dante is very capable of being compassionate if he trusts someone enough. He’s incredibly loyal to those who he deems worthy of his trust. And while he might not be the politest (or most tolerable) of companions, he will easily have someone’s back to the very end.
Abilities/Strengths and Weaknesses: First of all, Dante is nephilim. So, right off the bat, you know that he’s half angel/half demon. There’s no part of him that is or ever was “human,” despite his appearance. Given that, it’s safe to say most of his strengths lie within the superhuman “physical” category. He’s pretty spry and agile. Most of his attacks do include an array of weapons (a claymore, scythe, shotgun, taser gun, battle axe, double pistols, etc.). Most of these attacks are also “summoned.” Though, I think for the sake of being OP or whatever in this game, I’ll have him wind up without them. He does have one summonable ability that just makes his fist turn into flaming super-hulk-like-punching-fire gauntlets, called Eryx. That’s probably the only “unarmed” attack Dante has, but again, it’s magically enhanced.
It’s implied that he is physically, pretty strong. When he was younger, even before he had Rebellion (his claymore) and Ebony and Ivory (his pistols), his physical weapons that weren’t summoned, Dante could hold his own in a fight. He grew up in various institutions (orphanages, juvenile detention centers, and the original trailer implied there was an asylum in there at some point but who the hell knows because Ninja Theory) all which were apparently run by demons. He built up a reputation for starting riots and rebelling against the orderlies. Later in life when he was in Hellgate Prison, he had to be restrained as demons apparently didn’t want to get punched in the face anymore.
Dante also has a healing factor which he can “trigger” if he’s seriously wounded. He’s not immortal, but if he takes significant damage and can manage to get away, he can use this ability to his advantage.
HEEEEHnyway, despite all these physical abilities and strengths, Dante is extremely socially and emotionally fragile. He puts up to the token bad boy farce to often cover up deeply seeded hurt and hatred. For most of his life, given his father wiped his memory after his mother was murdered, he didn’t even know why he was so angry aside from the fact that demons were dicks. He also grew up extremely self conscious of his own humanity. Again, having his memory wiped left him with something of a mental handicap. He didn’t know he was part angel and really for the most part, didn’t even realize angels were a thing. Dante knew demons and he had a feeling he wasn’t human. So for the better part of his childhood he would often wonder if he was a demon himself.
Even after he regains his memories, Dante’s still emotionally guarded. After remembering his former “happy” family life, his relationship with his brother, and his mother, Dante remembers what it’s like to feel empathy and to live, but he’s grown up for the better part of his life without those things. So while he is capable of them, they’re still something of a chore. He’s extremely stubborn and incredibly impulsive. Oftentimes he doesn’t even think before he acts, he just does, which is why Vergil becomes a crucial counterpart in their missions. His brother being the brains of the operation, while Dante is the brute force.
While Dante’s interaction with Vergil is a bit more tender after he regains his memories, how well he deals with strangers is better displayed with Kat. Even when Dante wants to be cordial with someone or makes an effort at being tolerant or even polite, he isn’t well versed in that type of behavior. He often comes off as rude and uncaring. He makes offhanded and inappropriately crude remarks. In this sense, he’s socially, extremely weak. Persuasion skills are usually gained from threats versus actual wit.

[Here sits Dante, slouched back on one of the church’s chapel pews, feet propped up onto the back of another bunch in front of him. This little shit obviously thinks he is too cool for school.]
Ya know, it’s kinda’ funny how some dirt bag’s grand kidnapping plan involves taking me away from one demon infested shithole and plopping me right in yet another demon infested shithole. Guess I’m starting to notice a pattern here. I mean I get it, really. Who wouldn’t want to dick around with a good looking, talented, badass guy like myself? Thing is, I’m kinda’ busy right now. Saving the world, punching other demons, and all that good stuff.
So, whoever you are, if you can hear this, you got two options. One, I do this easy peasy, track you down, kill you, and go on my merry way. Or two, you tell me the quickest route outta’ this place and save yourself a serious ass whooping. Actually. Nah. One’s off the table. You’re dead either way.
[ Middle finger to the camera. Edgy as fuck. ]
So buckle up asshole--
[Said middle finger is now pointing at the camera. Whoa. I bet you’re scared now.]
I’m comin’ for you.
Meanwhile, to anyone else who can hear this message, I’m giving you a first class invite to stay the hell outta’ my way or if you’re feelin’ nice, helping me out. Drinks are on me.
[ That second option is said with a note of sarcasm. Like he doesn’t expect anyone to take him up on that offer. ]
Prose Log Sample:
Nearly twenty years had gone by at an excruciatingly slow pace. From orphanage to foster home to asylum to prison. With the obligatory short periods of breaking free only to be imprisoned in another slow and agonizingly tedious chunk of time in another demon-infested institution. Well, at least they had the creativity to change it up every once in awhile. There was that. But no, the life Dante led between his first orphanage and his final escape from Hellfire Prison seemed like an eternity. Don’t get him wrong, it had its entertaining moments. Nothing got Dante off more than pissing off and slaughtering dumbass demons.
However, what once felt like an eternity now seemed like only a sliver of time once Dante regained his memories. He’d been reunited with his brother (who fortunately had recovered from his force amnesia much more quickly) and had his own memories regained. In a way, it was kind of infuriating. Demons had fucked his life up enough without him being aware of his past. It was like adding insult to injury. Not only had they made his upbringing a (literal) living hell, they were also the reason the mother he once loved and adored was dead. They were what drove his father to erase the memories of his own two children. For their “safety.”
That so called safety, for the record, was utter bullshit.
Regardless, finding his family again and coming to the terms that he wasn’t and never had been a complete monster, made twenty years actually seem pretty damn short. Remembering emotions such as empathy and love, it really did a number on his brain. Like before now he’d just been living some empty fake shell of a life. He’d just gone from seven years old to twenty-seven in the blink of an eye. And however short it felt, he’d lost twenty damn years of his life to a fucking demon king. Some asshole who’d been pulling the strings of every bigwig in this city (and probably the planet). Some douchebag who’d been making both he and his brothers’ lives a pain in the ass for far too long.
So when Dante stood outside the front double doors of the Silver Sacks Towers, he couldn’t help but peer up into the security cameras positioned atop either one. Yeah, he knew Mundus was watching. Which was why he flashed the left camera a cocky grin before he quick drew Ebony from her holster and aiming it at the right cam. One shot to the lens and it was out. Then Dante, being Dante, used his free hand to flip off the right camera before firing a second shot, taking that one out as well.
“Hope you got tech support on speed dial, Mundus,” Dante quipped, before heading right through the front doors.

Upon arrival, your character will find themselves waking up early on the morning of Saturday, October 5th in the hotel of Southtown. If they inspect their person, they'll see that any and all weapons on their person have been removed or fully disabled, and that any devices previously used for communication have been taken from them. They have no recollection of how they came to be in this place, though all other memories will be intact.
But, thankfully, they will not be alone. They will find others like them. Others that might even have some answers, though they might not like what they hear.
